If you are looking to participate in a research study, there are some key things that you need to be aware of before you decide that this is what you want to do. It is the responsibility of the facility that will be conducting the research study to disclose with you the facts of the proceeding, but if you are not given that information up front, it is your responsibility to seek it out. This will be extremely beneficial to your safety. Furthermore, if you are thinking of participating in a clinical research study, and they have not disclosed all the pertinent facts to you, one may question whether or not they want to participate in the research study at all. They are going to wonder if their best interest is really placed at the center of the research study. If you would like to participate in research studies and are not sure if your participation will have a negative effect on your health, it is best that you ask those determining questions before you confirm your participation in that research study.

1. Research studies are conducted for a specific purpose. Although there is a large experimental aspect to all research studies, every research study are conducted for an intended purpose. The research studies are done with a specific goal in mind. In fact, this aspect of the research study is so vital to your decision as to whether or not you would like to participate, that it is required that they tell you the reason for the particular research study. In the meantime, if there are aspects of the intended purpose and goal that you do not understand, it is advised that you ask as many follow up questions possible. They may not be able to disclose to you any private data or concoctions, but they will be able to tell you the pertinent information that directly relates or could potentially relate to you.

2. Research studies are orchestrated by a particular facility or group. You want to know who is responsible for putting the research studies together before you decide that you want to participate. That way, you will have the opportunity to thoroughly research the group or facility to determine your comfort level with them. If you find that the research studies that you are thinking about participating in does not come from a reputable source, it may be in your best interest to decide against it.

3. All research studies should provide some type of benefit to the participants, be it financial or otherwise. Research studies should have some incentive for your participation. If there is no financial benefit or health associated benefit in the research studies, you should thoroughly evaluate your decision.
